Fresh Breath Centre: Bad Breath Treatment

Fresh Breath Centre: Bad Breath Treatment

Fresh Breath Centre: What is it and what does it do?

We understand that first impressions count. Halitosis (bad breath) is not pleasant yet very common yet it is an embarrassing problem that can be psychologically damaging.

At London Smiling, we treat bad breath as a medical condition. We will analyse the source of your bad breath, measuring the degree, and try to evaluate and solve your problem in a limited number of visits.

A personal interview, oral cancer exam, periodontal evaluation, video camera screening and clinical exam are used for proper diagnosis. We have treatment regimes to ensure this condition does not have to be your problem. Working with our hygienist, we will tailor a programme that is right for you and give you the confidence that comes with fresher breath.

Dr Uchenna Okoye gives her expert advice on how to beat the bad breath.

“Bad Breath, or the posh term, Halitosis, is basically a bacteria, releasing sulphuric gases which stink and no one wants to have that.

There are several causes of bad breath. If you have poor oral hygiene, if you’ve got gum disease, if you smoke, but also medical causes such as gut problems, if you don’t drink enough water, but the commonest cause is actually food such as onions and garlic.

None of us like to think we’ve got bad breath and it is actually quite difficult to tell. But there are certain signals to look out for. Have you noticed people turning away from you when you’re talking to them? Have you noticed that you go to kiss somebody and they turn the other cheek? Do the sniff test. It’s so simple. Just lick the back of your wrist and then sniff. If it smells bad, you know you’ve got it.

How do you tell someone that they have bad breath? That is such a difficult situation to be in. I suggest dropping hints, asking them if they’ve been eating a lot of garlic lately? Have they been to see their dentist lately? At my practice, I find a lot of friends and family buy teeth whitening for people and then I get a message saying “can you sort out their bad breath as well”.

If you’ve discovered you’ve got bad breath, don’t worry. The first step is to try and do something yourself. Improve your oral hygiene, spend time flossing, maybe invest in an electric toothbrush to make sure you really blitz the plaque bacteria. If that doesn’t work, go and see your dentist to find out the cause. If you’ve got gum disease, they may refer you to a gum specialist. At London Smiling, we run a fresh breath centre with the hygienist, who will work with you to formulate a programme to really tackle the problem. But after all this your teeth are healthy, your dentist might refer you to a doctor.”

"I have always viewed the hygienist session as a form of torture before! Mary has worked hard to make my treatment painless and has made me see the light about flossing. My gums are much better now and I would have no reluctance to see the hygienist regularly. Keep up the good work!" - Chris Backhouse
