Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening

Your smile is a big part of the image you reflect – it is noticed before you even speak a word!  A whiter, brighter smile is beautiful. It can help you feel better about yourself and make a memorable impression. Your lifestyle and the aging process can stain and darken your teeth. Teeth Whitening is a great way to get your smile looking its best and we will help you choose which system best suits you

What type of teeth whitening are available and what does it do?

Laser or “Power” Whitening

Laser whitening lightens the teeth using a photosensitive gel, which is painted onto the teeth and then activated by light. The whole process takes about one hour.

Home Whitening

A custom-made mouth guard is provided into which you add a small amount of whitening gel. This is worn overnight and after one to two weeks, your teeth will gradually lighten. The home kit can also be used to give even more whitening after “power” whitening if required.

Is it safe?

Both treatments are completely safe but should only be prescribed and carried out by a professional. Documented studies demonstrate that whitening causes no damage to the tooth structure. It does not cause brittleness or weakening of teeth and no cavities or gum problems have been shown to form because of the bleaching.

Does it hurt?

Most people find teeth whitening procedures to be painless, however some people may experience tooth sensitivity to hot and cold, or mild gum irritation after the procedure has taken place. This is a temporary effect that could last between 24 to 48 hours after the procedure takes place.

Does it work?

Professional tooth whitening will lighten stained teeth usually due to coffee tea and red wine, remove cigarette and tobacco stains and correct yellowing teeth due to aging.

How long do teeth whitening procedures take?

Power whitening takes about one hour. At-Home whitening takes about two weeks.

How long does it last?

The procedure lasts two to five years depending on your dietary habits. Whitening is very easy to top up and maintain.

Who has had it done?

Besides the thousands of procedures performed every month in the UK on a broad range of people including lawyers, receptionists, salespeople and housewives, many celebrities and media personalities including Paula Abdul, Suzanne Collins, and Keira Knightley have had teeth whitening.

“Of all the treatments that I do as a cosmetic dentist, teeth whiting is number one. It’s fast, effective and the most well known.

Although teeth do naturally discolour with time, there’s been an explosion in people wanting whiter teeth, and I can understand why. It’s the fact that whiter teeth do make you look better and feel younger. And also, every magazine that you flip open, you see all the celebrities with gleaming white smiles. And as a dentist, teeth whitening is actually one of the best ways to give my patients a really good confidence boost.

I’ve met a lot of people who think because they’ve got crowns they can’t have teeth whitening. Actually, the opposite is true, because your teeth have darkened and your crowns have stayed the same colour. So when I whiten their teeth, it reverses it back to the nice bright white colour is used to be.

A big misconception of teeth whitening is that it can make your teeth even more sensitive. However, I’ve got patients who before I whitened their teeth couldn’t even drink cold water. It can be done, you just have to find a professional to do it.

I think the biggest myth of all is the fear that if you whiten your teeth it’s going to get so white, it’s going to glow in the dark. However, you can choose the colour that your teeth end up. I prefer the natural look. And to achieve that, if you look at the colour of your whites of your eyes, that’s the colour they were at birth and what I do, is match up that colour and I know it’s going to work really well for everybody.

There are two methods to whiten teeth. There’s a home whitening which involves making custom trays to fit over your teeth and you wear them overnight usually, generally for about 2 weeks. Or there’s laser whitening, where the dentist puts the gel onto your teeth and uses a light to activate it. And that takes about an hour and a half.

Patient: “The colour of them now is back to when I was probably a teenager, or even younger”

For most people, whitening can last anything up to 2 years and even more. It really depends on your lifestyle. I’ve got some clients that top up every time they come for a check-up. I’ve got some people who haven’t done it for at least two years.

If you want to keep your teeth white, I have one simple rule. If it can stain a white shirt, it can stain your teeth and the darker the colour, the more deeply it will stain. The biggest enemies of white teeth are tea, coffee, red wine and smoking. Dumb people, including dentists say “stick to a white diet”. I say “be realistic”. Not only would that be difficult, but I think quite miserable.

If you want to keep your teeth white, but you drink tea, coffee, red wine, then I suggest you drink lots of water straight afterwards because it helps dilute the stains. Also, brush your teeth really well, because it gets rid of plaque and so the stains won’t stick. If you like drinking dark drinks like cola, then use a straw, because that helps protect your teeth. And my favourite tip of all – use a blue base lipstick rather than a brown/yellow one. It makes your teeth look white.”

"I was frankly a little terrified that it would hurt as I'm such a wimp but it was so easy. How often can you say you enjoyed a trip to the dentist?
